Drones for Construction

Background: One of the services this company provides is analyzing damage on roofs with Skydio drones using machine learning. This concept was created for the insurance market and the goal was to expand to the construction market.

Project Duration: 2022 - 2023

My Role and Responsibilities

As the UX designer on this project, I worked with the Senior UX Designer and Senior UX Researcher. The initial product was produced for the insurance market. With a tight timeline we were able to target and implement improvements for the new construction market.

Workflow

Research and Analysis

Usability Studies

Moderated sessions were conducted to observe users while they completed tasks on the current design. These sessions uncovered difficulty during initial setup, facet editing, and manual photo capture.

Competitive Analysis

A competitive analysis was conducted in order to understand the differences between our product and competitors in the market. We were able to pinpoint areas where our product was superior to the competition and other areas where it needed improvement. One of our most notable features mentioned by users was our automated flight planning technology.

Heuristic Evaluation

In order to recognize where the current design violates usability principles, we created multiple heuristic analyses to demonstrate to our non-designer stakeholders in a format that was simple and straightforward.

Journey Map

We created a journey map based on interviews and a new understanding of the workflow. We needed to comprehend the entire journey and how each piece is connected; from the initial setup, to flying a job, to the final report.

In the Field

We walked through every step of the drone solution; unboxed the drone, flew the over the roof of a home, and generated a report. I took footage of this journey and created a video showing each step. These photos are screenshots of the video, demonstrating the user and the iPad screen.

Outcome

  • Onboarding

We simplified the onboarding experience by removing unnecessary steps and provided a concise instruction manual.

  • Interface

We improved the interface design enabling users to navigate seamlessly.

  • Mobile

Users are in the field, using a phone or iPad. We proposed new design options for the mobile interface (not shown here).
